Medical Aesthetic Spas

Aesthetic and cosmetic goals can be pursued in a variety of medical spa settings, such as:

  • A medical office offering a combination of medical procedures and spa services.
  • A spa where doctors supervise or administer aesthetic/cosmetic procedures.
  • A medical establishment where doctors offer traditional medical services and procedures in a setting that is spa-like and non-traditional.
  • A hospital that offers aesthetic/cosmetic spa therapies and services.
  • A cosmetic dental office with a spa-like environment and spa services.
  • Cosmetic centers where pre- and post-operative spa therapies are available.
  • A wellness center that focuses on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), where non-traditional health care professionals may practice.

Injectables

Injectables is the short-hand name for cosmetic procedures that are delivered by injection. They are a fast and easy way (though not painless) way to manage wrinkles as you age. Injectables are usually offered at a medical spa, but increasingly you can get them at day spas and even resort spas, where a doctor or physician's assistant comes in for the day.

Before having injectables, the client should ask about the qualifications and experience of the person performing the injections. The client should also consult with the doctor or physician's assistant about expectations, the likely outcome, how long the results will last, and how much it will cost.

The most popular injectable is Botox, which works by immobilizing the muscles that cause expression lines. Dermal fillers are another type of injectable that works by filling in the expression lines and depressions that appear as you get older and your skin thins.

There are many different dermal fillers, which use different materials, last for varying lengths of time and have a variety of uses. Temporary dermal fillers include collagen, Restylane, Hylaform and Perlane. Semi-permanent fillers includes Radiesse and Sculptra. Artefill is a permanent filler.

Aesthetic and cosmetic spas feature procedures and services whose purpose is anti-aging and improving appearance. These medical  spas offer such procedures as Botox, laser skin rejuvenation, fillers, Microdermabrasion, plastic surgery and dermatology.

Aesthetic medical spas have to do with "etics" (or esthetics) and involve beauty in both form and appearance. Cosmetic medical spas offer procedures that modify the appearance of a physical feature, defect, or irregularity without altering the body's basic structure or functions.
