A General Overview of the
Medical Spa
If you listened
to the so-called experts you would be convinced that someone in the 21st
century either discovered or invented the “medical spa.”
But nothing is farther from the truth. In fact, the medical spa was
probably around in some primitive form a long time before our ancestors
even managed to walk in an upright position.
But what exactly
is a “medical spa?”
According to
general definitions taken from www.dictionary.com, the word “medical”
is an adjective defined as “of, pertaining to, or having to do with,
the art of healing, or the science of medicine. “
The word “spa”
is “taken from the name of the famous mineral springs in Spa,
Belgium, and has become a common noun denoting any place with a
medicinal or mineral spring. “
In 2008, the word
spa has taken on new and expanded meaning and denotes any of a
series of facilities that offer massage, facials, hair styling, nail
treatments, body treatments and a variety of water therapies.
The term “medical
spa” is usually defined as either a medical practice that has
expanded by offering spa services or a spa that has expanded by offering
medical services.
According to the National Coalition of
Estheticians, Manufacturers, Distributors & Associations (NCEA),
a medical spa is a facility that during all hours of business shall
operate under the on-site supervision of a licensed health care
professional operating within their scope of practice, with a staff that
operates within their scope of practice as defined by their individual
licensing board if licensure is required. The facility may offer
traditional, complimentary, and alternative health practices and
treatments in a spa-like setting. The mission of the NCEA is to
represent the esthetic profession by defining and conveying standards of
practice, while educating the industry and the public.

Medical spas continue to increase, thrive
and grow in 2008 as consumers seek a nurturing/caring environment and
more control over their health regimes. Blending traditional
medical expertise with spa luxury and innovation, medical spas
have become trusted venues for hair removal, dermal fillers,
Botox, skin rejuvenation, cellulite reduction, health and wellness, executive physicals,
other cosmetic treatments, dentistry and
dermatology.
It is believed that the
medical spa industry will continue to expand for the foreseeable future
as they earn the respect
of the traditional medical community and the general public. It
is predicted that the medical spa industry will continue to prosper as mainstream physicians
continue to embrace proven alternative therapies, insurers
continue to recognize the value of preventative spa therapies,
and cosmetic procedures become increasingly valuable annuities
for elite doctors.

"There is more to the medical spa
business than simply buying a franchise, hiring a doctor or PA,
purchasing some medical aesthetics devices and placing an ad in the
